Regulations are essential for a sustainable maritime industry
Standards committees and certified bodies
Scenario planning is essential for a sustainable maritime industry. Do regulations drive technology, and do they adjust to the technologies available on the market?
We are happy to experience that certified bodies support the use of modern technologies. Legislation will be updated in the near future to reflect this. As a result, fears that regulations will interfere with the effective use of new technologies, such as a solid-state DC breaker switch, should be a thing of the past.
We collaborate with and are supported by certified bodies
Our range of Astrol DC breaker switches was type approved in November 2019 by DNV-GL. Type approvals from Lloyds Register and Bureau Veritas will follow soon
Participation in standards committees
KWx participates in various norm committees, of which our participation in the NEC 18 is most important to our maritime-related activities.
The national standards committee NEC 18 “Electrical installations on ships and on mobile and fixed units in the water” follows all activities of the international standardization in IEC/TC 18. It shows an active and competent committee with a good distribution of all stakeholders in electrical installations on ships. The committee has a long track record and extensive experience in translating national interests to an international level. They closely follow developments and are open to new technology such as alternative energy carriers on board and seek contact with adjacent committees, for example by examining the possibilities for standards for shore connections. The committee has a highly relevant and extensive network, with which frequent contact is maintained.
